How a job runs

What decides how a driveway lasts is under it, and it’s covered within hours. So here it is.

A driveway ready to pour: timber formwork pegged along both sides, and steel mesh raised on orange bar chairs over compacted road base.
Wadalba, the day before the pour: forms set to fall away from the garage, mesh up on chairs so it ends up inside the slab, not under it.
  1. Free measure, written quoteNikau measures up, checks access and levels, and sends one total in writing, usually within two business days.
  2. Permit and Before You DigThe crossover sits on council land, so it needs Central Coast Council’s OK. We fill in the application with you. We lodge a Before You Dig enquiry before we excavate.
  3. Dig out, base and formsExcavate, compact the road base, set the forms to fall about 10 mm a metre away from the house, and sit the mesh on chairs. Council checks the crossover forms before we pour.
  4. Pour dayTruck at 7am. We place, screed, float and finish it the same morning, while it sets on its own clock.
  5. Saw cuts the same dayJoints are cut with water on the saw, so if the slab cracks as it shrinks, it cracks along a line we chose.
  6. Keep off while it curesWalk on it after a day or two. It’s usually about a week before you drive on it, and we’ll tell you the day for your slab.

Weather. We check the forecast the day before. Rain, strong wind or a day over 30° moves the pour, and we ring you that afternoon, before the truck is ordered.

Nikau kneeling at the edge of a fresh driveway, washing the surface with a hose and a soft broom. The washed part shows the stones set in the slab; the rest is still smooth grey.
Washing back exposed aggregate, Woongarrah. Too early and the stones come loose, too late and they stay buried.

Questions

How much will my driveway cost?

It’s priced by the square metre, then changed by the finish, whether old concrete has to come out, whether the truck can reach, and how thick it needs to be. The guide is in What it costs. After a free measure you get one written total.

Do I need a council permit?

For the crossover, the bit between your boundary and the kerb, yes. It’s on council land and council sets its levels. We fill in the application with you, you pay council’s fee, and council checks our formwork before we pour. Its timing can move the pour date.

When can I walk and drive on it?

Walk on it after a day or two. It’s usually about a week before you drive on it, longer in cold weather. We’ll tell you the day for your slab.

Will it crack?

Concrete shrinks as it dries, so nobody can honestly promise it won’t. We cut joints so that if it cracks, it cracks along those lines, and the mesh holds any crack tight. A good base does the rest.

What if it rains on the day?

We check the forecast the day before and move the pour if it looks wrong, before the truck is ordered. If a shower comes through after we pour, we cover it.

Can you take out my old driveway?

Yes. We cut it out with water on the saw to keep the dust down, break it up and take it away. It’s priced separately in your quote.

Do you lodge Before You Dig?

Yes, before any excavation. Its plans show roughly where pipes and cables are, not exactly, so we dig carefully near them.

Are you licensed, and do I get a contract?

Yes. Nikau holds NSW contractor licence 555039C for general concreting, and we carry public liability insurance. Every job over $5,000 gets a written contract.
