Operations advice for established Riverina businesses

What we’ll tell you

What’s getting in the way, and what to change first. In writing.

What we’ll do with you

Put the changes in place, alongside your team.

What owners bring us

Who we work with. Established businesses with staff, across the Riverina: trades, transport, professional practices and care providers.

What we don’t do. Tax, accounting, legal or financial advice. If that’s what you need, we’ll say so.

Three ways to work with us

Each one names what you’ll get in writing, what we’ll do alongside your team, and where our part stops.

Operations review

Two days on site

What we’ll tell you:

A written report: how work moves from enquiry to invoice, where it gets stuck, and what to change first. Then a debrief with you and your managers.

What we’ll do with you:

Not part of the review. For a hand putting the report into practice, add implementation support.

Next: you decide what to act on. The report is yours either way.

Planning session

One day, owners and leaders

What we’ll tell you:

A written plan after the day: the priorities you agreed, who owns each one, and the first steps.

What we’ll do with you:

Prepare the day with you, then run it, at your premises or a room you book.

Next: your leaders own the actions, and the plan names who does each one.

Implementation support

Month by month, after a review

What we’ll tell you:

A short note each month: what’s done, what’s stuck, and what’s next.

What we’ll do with you:

Work alongside your team on the agreed changes: quoting steps, handover checklists, role descriptions, and showing staff the new way.

Next: each month’s scope and price is agreed in writing, and you can stop at the end of any month.

A planning day: mapping how a job moves from the first call to the invoice, with the people who do the work.

Not sure where to start? Start with a conversation.

You don’t need a brief, or to pick one of the three. “Jobs keep running late” is enough to begin with.

Two examples of the work

Clients aren’t named here without their permission. The line shows where our part stopped; what the business did itself sits below it.

Example

A plumbing business with about a dozen staff

Quotes could take a week to go out, and jobs often reached the crew without the right parts or access details.

What we told them

After two days on site, a written report with five changes in order, starting with one job sheet that follows each job from quote to crew. Then a debrief.

What we did with them

Nothing further. They chose to make the changes themselves.

What they didThe office manager rebuilt the quote template and brought in the job sheet. The owner set aside Friday mornings to sign off quotes.

What changedBy the owner’s count, most quotes now go out within two working days, and fewer jobs need a second trip for parts.

Example

A family transport business, as the founder steps back

The founder still made most decisions, and dispatch, maintenance and customer calls each had two or three people who thought they were in charge.

What we told them

A review, then a planning day with the founder and four leaders, and a written plan naming an owner for each area.

What we did with them

Four months of implementation support: role descriptions drafted with each leader, a weekly meeting set up, and a monthly check-in.

What they didThe leaders agreed the roles, explained them to the drivers and yard staff, and now run the weekly meeting themselves.

What changedThe founder now spends two days a week away from the depot, and fewer calls come to him asking who decides.

Examples, not promises. What changes depends on the business, and on what its people do after we leave.

Who you’ll work with

Bronwyn Tait, smiling, in an olive jacket with her glasses on a cord, standing by a window.

Bronwyn Tait

Principal consultant

Before TernwellRan operations for a regional trades business: the quoting, the scheduling and the crews.

Bronwyn leads every first conversation, review and planning day, and signs off every report. If you work with Ternwell, you work with her.

Tuan Pham

Associate consultant

Before TernwellScheduled crews and work orders for a transport business.

Tuan maps how work moves through your business during a review, and works alongside your team during implementation. Bronwyn reviews his work before it reaches you.

No commissionsWe take no commissions or referral fees from software or suppliers we recommend. If we suggest a product, you buy it direct, and we earn nothing from it.

Ask for referencesThere’s no licence for management consulting in Australia, so judge us on the work. Ask, and we’ll put you in touch with past clients who have agreed to take a call.

Questions owners ask

Do you work with businesses like ours?

If you run an established service business with staff in the Riverina, probably. We work with trades, transport, professional practices and care providers. We’re not the right fit for start-ups raising money, or for tax, legal or financial advice.

What will our team need to give?

For a review: a couple of hours of your time, a short talk with each person who quotes, schedules or does the work, and access to recent quotes and job records. We fit around your jobs, not the other way round.

Will you keep what we tell you confidential?

Yes. What you tell us stays with Bronwyn and Tuan, and we’re happy to sign your confidentiality agreement before the first conversation. Reports go only to the people you name.

Do you work with our competitors?

We might work with another business in your trade. If we do, we tell you before we start, and nothing from one client’s work is used in another’s.

How will we know it helped?

Before a review, we agree two or three things to watch, such as how long quotes take to go out. We look at them again at the debrief and, during implementation support, each month. We can’t promise they’ll move: that depends on the changes your team makes.

Can it all be done remotely?

Reviews and planning days happen on site, because that’s where the work is. The first conversation and the monthly check-ins can be by phone or video.

When could you start?

We’ll talk about dates in the first conversation, and they go into the written scope, so you know before you agree.
