What’s the job?

Earthpin Electrical Pty Ltd, NSW electrical contractor Lic. 555075C

Power off right now?

Three quick checks. They can save you a call-out.

  1. Is the street dark too?

If the neighbours have no power either, it’s the network, not your wiring. Check Ausgrid’s outage map or call Ausgrid on 13 13 88.

  2. Safety switch keeps tripping?

Unplug everything, then reset it. If it holds, plug things back in one at a time: the one that trips it is usually the culprit. If it trips with nothing plugged in, leave it off and call us.

  3. Burning smell, sparks or a hot power point?

Switch off at the main switch if you can do it safely, and keep away from it. If there’s smoke or fire, call 000 first. Then call us.

How a job runs

The same four steps, whether it’s one power point or a new board.

  1. You send the job

A line about it and a photo of the switchboard if you can. The photo tells us what to bring.

  2. We call back with a price or a time

Within the hour on weekdays. Fixed-price jobs get the price on the call. Bigger jobs get a written quote after a look.

  3. We do the work and test it

Drop sheets down, power off only as long as needed, and we show you what we did before we leave.

  4. You get the certificate

We lodge it with Building Commission NSW and email you a copy with the invoice.

Who comes to your place

Mai Truong in her hi-vis work shirt beside the van on a terrace street.
Mai Truong, licensed electrician and owner.

I did my apprenticeship in Marrickville and worked for two bigger contractors before starting Earthpin. Most of our work is in terraces and older apartments, where the wiring has been added to by a few different people over the years.

I answer the phone myself until 9pm. If I can’t come, I’ll say so and tell you who can.

Questions

What does the service call cost?

$129 on weekdays from 7am to 4pm, which covers travel, the first 30 minutes and finding the fault. After that it’s $26 for each 15 minutes. After hours (weekdays 4pm to 9pm, and weekends) it’s $219, then $40 for each 15 minutes. Fixed-price jobs like smoke alarms don’t have a service call on top.

Half my house has no power. Who do I call?

Check whether the neighbours have power. If they don’t, call Ausgrid on 13 13 88. If it’s only you, look at the switchboard: if a safety switch has tripped, try the steps above. If you smell burning, switch off at the main if it’s safe and call us.

My safety switch keeps tripping. Is the switch broken?

Usually not. It’s doing its job: something on that circuit is leaking power, often an appliance, an outdoor power point or a light fitting with water in it. Try unplugging everything and resetting. If it still trips, leave it off and call us.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade?

Signs are old ceramic fuses, no safety switches, scorch marks, or a board that’s full. We look first and quote in writing. Most inner west terraces come to $1,650 to $2,400 with the new board, a safety switch on every circuit, testing and the certificate.

Can you fit an EV charger?

Yes. We check your switchboard can take it first, single or three phase. $1,190 to fit a charger you’ve bought within 10 metres of the board, with its own circuit, testing and the certificate. Longer runs are quoted.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes. For every repair, addition or replacement we lodge a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) with Building Commission NSW within seven days of testing, and email you a copy.

Tell us about the job.

A photo of the switchboard helps. We call back within the hour on weekdays.
