Half each with next door

In NSW, neighbours usually share the cost of a dividing fence equally. So we quote it that way: one quote with the total and both halves, and next door gets a number too.

Your half$1,060
Next door’s half$1,060

$2,120 total including GST, for 20 m of 1.8 m steel fence with the old fence taken away.

A guide on flat, clear ground. Your quote follows a free site measure.

Two neighbours leaning on an old grey paling fence, smiling as they read a quote together on a phone.
The quote goes to both houses, with each half shown, if you give us next door’s details.
  1. Talk over the fence

Most neighbours agree once they see a number. Send them this page, or ask us to send the quote to both of you.

  2. One quote, both halves

Grant measures from your side. The quote names the fence, its height and colour, the total and each half, so you both say yes to the same fence.

  3. If next door won’t answer

NSW has a formal fencing notice. It sets out the boundary, the fence and the estimated cost, and our quote can go with it. After a month, either owner can apply to NCAT or the Local Court.

Read the state’s own words first: the State Library of NSW guide to dividing fences and NCAT’s dividing fences page. Community Justice Centres can help you talk it through.

What a fence costs

Per metre, including GST, posts concreted in, panels or palings, rails, capping and clean-up, on flat, clear ground.

What costs extra, and why we ask before quoting

  • Taking away the old timber or steel fence: $14 a metre (in the totals above)
  • Slopes and steps, rock in the post holes, sleeper plinths under the fence
  • Lattice or slat toppers and extra height
  • Old fibro fences: removed first by a licensed asbestos removalist, who quotes you directly

Measuring and quoting is free and there’s nothing to sign until you say yes.

Kylie M.Oran Park, steel fence

Grant measured up on the Saturday and the quote was in my inbox Monday with our half and the neighbours half split out. Fence went up in a day and they swept the driveway after.

Sam T.Harrington Park, storm repair

Old paling fence came down in the storm. Rang first thing, temp fence up that afternoon so the dog couldnt get out. New fence the week after. Good blokes.

Priya R.Gregory Hills, pool fence

Our pool fence failed the inspection before the sale, gate wasn’t closing properly. They replaced the hinges and one panel within the week and the price was what they quoted.

How a job runs

From the first call to the last offcut in the trailer.

An orange string line pulled tight between timber pegs on bare dirt, with orange paint rings marking the post holes and one hole freshly dug.
Every run starts on a string line, with a paint mark where each post goes.
  1. Measure and quote

Grant comes out, measures and looks at access, slope and the old fence. The written quote follows by the next business day.

    Usually within the week
  2. Before You Dig

We lodge a free Before You Dig enquiry for every job, so we know where the pipes and cables run before the auger goes in.

  3. Materials ordered

Once you and next door say yes, we order the panels or palings in your colour.

Steel and timber about a week, glass two to three
  4. Old fence out, posts in

The old fence comes down and goes on the trailer. Posts go in on the string line, concreted with rapid set.

  5. Panels, capping, clean-up

Panels and rails go on the same day, then we sweep up and take every offcut with us. Both houses get a photo of the finished run.

Pool fences and gates

Pool fences

Glass or aluminium, built and repaired to AS 1926.1. Failed an inspection? Send us the report and we’ll quote the fixes.

  • New barriers, gates, hinges and latches
  • We don’t certify pools. The certificate comes from your council or a registered pool inspector, and NSW pools go on the Swimming Pool Register.

Sliding and swing gates

Driveway and side gates in steel, aluminium slat or timber, manual or automatic.

  • Motors with safety stops, obstacle sensing and a manual release
  • We don’t do the wiring. The power is connected by a licensed electrician, and we arrange it.

Questions

Who pays for a fence between two houses?

In NSW the starting point is that neighbours share the cost of a sufficient dividing fence equally. Our quote shows both halves. The State Library of NSW guide explains the rules in full.

My neighbour won’t reply. What now?

You can give them a fencing notice setting out the boundary, the fence and the estimated cost. Our quote can go with it. After a month, either of you can apply to NCAT or the Local Court, and Community Justice Centres can help you talk first. This is general information, not legal advice.

How much per metre?

Steel 1.8 m is $92 a metre and timber paling 1.8 m is $108 a metre, including GST, posts, footings and clean-up on flat, clear ground. Gates, slopes, rock and taking the old fence away are extra. The final price follows a free site measure.

Do you take the old fence away?

Yes, timber and steel, at $14 a metre. Homes built before 1990 can have fibro fences containing asbestos. Those are removed first by a licensed asbestos removalist, who quotes you directly.

Will my pool fence pass?

We build and repair to AS 1926.1, but we don’t certify. The certificate comes from your council or a registered pool inspector.

Where exactly is the boundary?

We build on the line you and next door agree on. If you’re not sure, a surveyor can mark it before we start.

How long until you can start?

Most measures happen within the week. Once you say yes, steel and timber take about a week to arrive and glass two to three, and most suburban runs are built in one day.
