How a term works

Nine weeks, a new sport each week, and in week nine the kids pick their favourite to play again. Choose an age group, then tap a week to see what they’ll do.

Week 1

Ages 6 to 8: dribbling, passing to a partner, and three a side games into small goals.

Gear: size 3 soft balls, pop-up goals and cones.

Classes and times

Ages are a guide, not a rule. A shy six year old can start with the 3 to 5s, and an eight year old who plays club sport may suit the 9 to 12s. Tell us when you book and we’ll suggest a group.

Every group plays the same nine sports, at its own size and pace, with one coach to every eight children at most.

The gear is ours

Every ball, bat and goal is smaller, lighter or softer, so a five year old can hit, catch and score in the first ten minutes. Nothing extra to buy: no uniform, no registration fee.

A mesh bag of soft, multicoloured balls, stacked marker cones, plastic hoops and a short cricket bat on the grass in late afternoon sun.
Soft balls, marker cones, hoops and a short bat: most of a cricket week.

What we bring

  • Soft balls and low-bounce tennis balls
  • Short bats, racquets and hockey sticks
  • Small goals, and rings that lower
  • Foam javelins and hurdles, hoops, bibs

What to bring

  • A full water bottle
  • A hat, and sunscreen on before class
  • Runners, not sandals
  • Clothes they can run and get grass on

Who coaches

Bookings, make-ups and absences go to Tayla. Anything about your child’s safety goes to Josefa.

  • Bachelor of Education, Health and Physical Education
  • Community coaching courses in cricket, netball and AFL
  • First aid and CPR, kept current
  • Queensland blue card

Arjun Kapoor

Coach, ages 6 to 12

One number for everything: (07) 5550 0264 reaches Tayla in office hours. During a class it goes to the coach on the field, so you can always reach someone if you’re running late.

Safe with children

We follow Queensland’s child safe standards. This is what that means at a class.

Raising a concern

Talk to Josefa on (07) 5550 0264 or at josefa@hopfieldsport.example. Children can tell any coach, and we’ll listen.

If you’d rather speak to someone outside Hopfield, the Queensland Family and Child Commission oversees child safe standards for organisations like ours.

Questions parents ask

Do parents stay?

For the 3 to 5s, yes: you join in on the field. For 6 to 12, you can stay and watch from the side or drop off at the meeting point. Please be back five minutes before the end.

What happens in rain, storms or heat?

If there’s lightning or heavy rain, we text by 2pm for after school classes and by 7am on Saturdays, and either cancel or move into the Kirwan hall. In the heat we play shorter games, stop for drinks often and use the shade.

My child finds groups hard. Can you help?

Usually, yes. Call Tayla or Josefa and tell us what helps your child: a quiet start, a set spot, more time with the gear. A support person can join in at no cost. We’re coaches, not therapists, and we’ll say so if another program would suit better.

Can my child move up a group?

Yes, at the start of any term. We’ll suggest it if we think they’re ready, and ask you first.
