Where are you starting?

A check at seven isn’t braces at seven.

The Australian Dental Association recommends a first orthodontic check between the ages of 7 and 10. Often the answer is “not yet”, and that’s a good answer.

A first check ends one of three ways

Nothing to doKeep seeing your dentist as usual.

Watch and review oftenWe see your child again as their adult teeth come through, and decide then.

A planEarly treatment isn’t needed for every child. If it is, you get the options, the timing and a written quote first.

At the first check

  1. We talkWhat you’ve noticed, and what your child thinks. We ask them too.
  2. Dr Tan looksTeeth, bite and jaw, with photos. About 45 minutes in all.
  3. Records, only if neededIf X-rays or a scan would help, we tell you the cost before we take them.
  4. You leave with an answerNothing to do, a date to review, or options and a written quote.
No referral needed

You don’t need a dentist’s referral to see a private orthodontist. If your dentist suggested a check, tell us when you book.

Braces or aligners?

It depends on how your teeth and bite need to move, not only on how the appliance looks. Dr Tan will tell you what suits you at the first check.

Braces

For teens and adults

  • A small bracket on each tooth, with a wire through them. Elastic bands hold the wire in place.
  • Metal brackets, or tooth-coloured ones if you’d rather they blend in.
  • Regular adjustment visits while your teeth move.

Clear aligners

For adults, and some teens

  • A series of clear trays, each one moving your teeth a little further.
  • You take them out to eat and brush, so they only work if you wear them for as long each day as Dr Tan asks.
  • They suit many bites, not every bite. The Australian Dental Association doesn’t recommend DIY aligners.

How long? Treatment usually takes between one and three years. You get your own estimate at the first check, not a promise of a finish date.

The whole course, priced.

One quote for your whole treatment, from the first appliance to your retainers. Never a weekly teaser.

Questions

Do I need a referral?

No. You don’t need a referral to see a private orthodontist. If your dentist suggested a check, let us know when you book.

Public orthodontic treatment in NSW is different: a child needs to hold, or be a dependant on, an eligible concession card, meet clinical criteria, and be referred through the public dental service.

When should my child have a first check?

The Australian Dental Association recommends a first orthodontic check between 7 and 10. That doesn’t mean braces at that age. Often we’ll watch and review as the adult teeth come through.

What does the first visit cost?

$195, for about 45 minutes with Dr Tan, with photos. If X-rays or a scan would help, we tell you the cost before we take them.

What will the whole treatment cost?

You get a written quote for the whole course before anything starts. It includes the braces or aligners, every adjustment visit, repairs during treatment, your first retainers and a year of retainer check-ups.

As a guide, braces are $8,000 to $12,000 and clear aligners $5,900 to $12,900.

Can I pay it off?

Yes. Our own plan is a deposit, then monthly payments, with no interest and no fees. Your quote shows the deposit, each payment, how many there are and the total.

Will my health fund or Medicare help?

Health funds: orthodontic extras usually have waiting periods and yearly and lifetime limits. Ask your fund for an estimate using the item numbers on your quote.

Medicare covers some orthodontic work only for certain cleft and craniofacial conditions. The Child Dental Benefits Schedule doesn’t cover orthodontics.

Braces or clear aligners?

It depends on how your teeth and bite need to move. Aligners suit many adults, but not every bite, and they only work if you wear them as long as you’re asked to each day. Dr Tan explains the options at the first check.

What happens after treatment?

You wear retainers, because teeth can move back. Dr Tan tells you how long each day, and we check them at review visits. Keep seeing your regular dentist for check-ups and cleans.
