Two groups, five days a fortnight
Kindy is 15 hours a week, as five full days a fortnight. Find the days that suit your family, then tap that group’s bag at the top to see how to apply.
- Red hook
Mondays and Tuesdays, and Wednesday in week A. 8.45am to 2.45pm, up to 20 children.
- Blue hook
Thursdays and Fridays, and Wednesday in week B. 8.45am to 2.45pm, up to 20 children.
Carmen Ruiz teaches both groups, and every kindy day has a teacher and an education assistant with the group: Carmen and Glenys. Kindy runs in school terms, and we give you each term’s calendar with week A and week B marked.
Who can start kindy
Kindy is for children who turn 4 by 30 June in the year they start. Tap your child’s birthday month.
Born January to June Starts kindy in the year they turn 4
Born July to December Starts kindy the year after they turn 4
That’s why some children start kindy at 3: with a birthday between February and June, they turn 4 during their kindy year.
Kindy is optional. Pre-primary, the year after kindy, is the first compulsory year of school. There’s no early start: children come in their kindy year, not before.
How to apply
You apply to the kindy itself, not through a portal.
Get in touch. Call or email, and we’ll send you an application pack.
Come for a visit. See a kindy day and meet Carmen and Glenys.
Send in Part A, the application. We look at them together after the closing date.
If we offer a place, return Part B with the birth certificate, immunisation record and proof of address.
Good to know before you apply
- An application isn’t an offer. A place is yours once we offer it in writing.
- Your child needs to meet WA’s immunisation requirements, and can be enrolled in one kindy program only.
- A place here doesn’t guarantee one at Mossbend Primary School, unless you live in its local intake area.
The voluntary contribution
We ask each family for a voluntary contribution, like the ones public schools ask for. No child is turned away or left out because a family hasn’t paid it.
- The contribution
- Voluntary, once a year. It helps with books, paint and sandpit toys. Ask us for this year’s amount.
- Optional extras
- Now and then, a visiting show or kindy photos. We tell you well ahead, and you choose.
- Fundraising
- The committee runs a cake stall or two a term. Join in if you can; it’s never a condition of a place.
A day at kindy
Children learn by playing: building, digging, painting and pretending. Carmen plans around what the group is curious about, using the Early Years Learning Framework and the WA Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines.
Bag on the hook. Say goodbye, then find something to play with.
On the mat. News, a song and the plan for the day.
Play, inside and out. Blocks, paint, the sandpit, the veggie patch.
Fruit together, from the fruit roster, at the long table.
Lunch and a rest, then outside again and a story to finish.
Home time. Carmen sees every child out to a grown-up.
No worksheets, no homework, and no promises about reading before school. Kindy is for making friends, taking turns and asking questions.
Who does what
Carmen Ruiz
Teacher, both groupsEmployed by the Department of Education and registered with the Teacher Registration Board of WA.
Glenys Pike Education assistant
Also employed by the Department. With every group, every kindy day.
The parent committee Aroha Tane, president
Families run the kindy as an incorporated association. The committee looks after the building, money and garden; what’s taught is up to Carmen.
If something isn’t right
- 1
Talk to Carmen first.
- 2
Then the principal of Mossbend Primary School.
- 3
Then the Department of Education’s regional education office.
Mossbend Primary School is our linked school. We’re not part of it, but its principal oversees Carmen’s teaching and the school keeps our enrolment records.
How families help
A community kindy runs on its families, and all of it is optional. There’s a fruit roster, a working bee in the garden each term, and the committee, which meets one evening a month and always welcomes new faces.
Keeping children safe
- Staff, and helpers who aren’t a parent of a child here, hold a WA Working with Children Check. Parents helping at their own child’s kindy don’t need one.
- Carmen is a mandatory reporter under WA law.
- We photograph children, and share photos, only with your written permission.
- Only grown-ups you’ve named can collect your child.
Questions families ask
Does my child need to be toilet trained?
Most children are by kindy, but not all. Tell us where your child is up to and pack spare clothes, and Glenys will help with accidents.
What goes in the bag on the hook?
A hat, a water bottle, lunch and a change of clothes, with a name on everything. On your fruit roster day, add the fruit.
How do children settle in?
Visit first if you can. In the first weeks you’re welcome to stay a while at drop-off, and Carmen will tell you how the day went at pick-up.
Do we have to live in Bassendean?
No. If more families apply than we have places, children who live in our local area are offered places first, then others while there’s room.
What about allergies or medicine?
Tell Carmen before the first day and she’ll make a plan with you. Medicine is only given with your written instructions.
Is kindy on in the school holidays?
No. Kindy follows the WA school terms, the same as Mossbend Primary School.
