Year levels and subjects

Pick a year level for the subjects, what lessons cover, and the tutor who would teach your child. The red notes in the margin are the kind of feedback we write: what a student can now do without us.

Who’ll teach your child

Dilan takes every first session, then matches your child with the tutor for their year level and subject. They keep that tutor, week after week.

If the match isn’t right

Tell Dilan. We’ll change the time, the group or, where we can, the tutor. If it still isn’t working, you can stop at the end of the term.

Tutoring isn’t a registered profession, so it’s fair to ask what a tutor has studied. Ours is listed above, exactly as held. Everyone here also holds a Victorian Working with Children Check: how lessons run.

Start with one session

45 minutes with Dilan for $60, at the centre or online. There’s no test to pass, and nothing to sign up to.

  1. Book a timeOnline or by phone. Tell us the year level and subject, and anything school has said.
  2. Sit down with DilanHe works through some reading, writing or maths with your child and asks what they find hard. You’re welcome to sit in.
  3. Get a short written planBy email within two days. It says what to work on first and who would teach them.
  4. Then decideIf you go ahead, lessons are paid one term at a time, and you can stop at the end of any term.

Yours to keep, whatever you decide

The written plan covers

  • What to work on first
  • Who would teach your child
  • Small group or one to one
  • A day and time that suits
  • How we’ll show you progress

Fees, in full

Each price is the total, including GST, and lessons are paid by the term. There’s no enrolment fee, no materials fee, and nothing added later.

What progress looks like

Twice a term you get a short note by email. Read the margin first: what your child can now do without help, and what still needs a prompt. We don’t promise marks.

Example

Progress note

Year 5, maths, small group

Can find a fraction of an amount aloneWorked on: fractions of an amount, and checking each answer with an estimate.

Still needs a prompt to start theseNext: worded problems. The maths is fine once she knows which step comes first.

What we won’t promise, and won’t do

Marks, ATARs or a selective school place

Your child’s teacher does most of the teaching, and their own effort counts for a lot. Lessons here add an hour or two a week. Nobody can say how much of a result came from each, so we don’t claim it.

Assessed work

We’ll help a student understand a task and plan it, and we follow the school’s rules on what help is allowed. What they hand in is their own work.

How lessons run

Every lesson happens where it can be seen, by people who have been checked. If anything worries you, talk to Dilan.

One of the tutoring rooms: round tables with coloured chairs, a whiteboard and bookshelves, a glass wall on one side and the shopfront window on the other.

Our rooms have glass walls, in sight of the front desk.

Worried about something?

Talk to Dilan Perera in person, on (03) 5550 0529 or at dilan@inkwelllane.example. If it’s about Dilan, write to Jacinta Moore at jacinta@inkwelllane.example. We’ll write back to tell you what we’ve done.

Questions parents ask

Do lessons follow what they’re doing at school?

Yes. Up to Year 10 we follow the Victorian Curriculum, and in Years 11 and 12 the VCE course for English, General Mathematics or Mathematical Methods. Bring their workbook or a recent task and we’ll start from there.

Small group or one to one?

Small groups suit students who like company and need practice. One to one suits a student who is a long way behind or ahead, or who finds it hard to ask questions. Dilan will suggest one in the written plan, and you choose.

What if my child needs things done differently?

Tell us at the first session. We can slow the pace, shorten tasks, read questions aloud or use larger print. We don’t diagnose or assess learning difficulties; if we think another professional could help, we’ll say so.

Will you talk to my child’s teacher?

Only if you’d like us to, and with your permission. Otherwise everything goes through you.

Can you help with an assignment that’s due?

We’ll help them understand the task and make a plan, within the school’s rules. They do the writing; we never do assessed work for a student.

What about the school holidays?

We open by appointment, mostly for catch-up and revision, at the same prices. Call or email and Jacinta will find a time.
