Many new clients come recommended and still search your name before they ring. The rest type their problem in plain words. Joseph works on what both of them find, written with the Solicitors’ Conduct Rules in mind.
The call is free. If marketing isn’t worth it for you yet, Joseph will say so.

How people choose a lawyer.
Five searches a small firm’s new clients make, and what wins each one.

ellery bracken legal
Recommended by a friend, then searched by name.
Clients often hear your name from someone they trust, and search it before they ring. What they see is your Google profile: the rating, recent reviews, your lawyers and your hours. A half-finished one loses people who’d already decided to call.

-
lawyer near me
Nearby: three firms on the map, then the rating.
People choose from the three firms Google shows close to them. Categories and services for each area of law you practise, not only ‘Law firm’, and a steady flow of recent reviews are what Google and the person searching both look at.

lawyer for unpaid invoice
A customer won’t pay: they type the problem, not ‘debt recovery’.
People rarely know which area of law they need, so they type what happened. A page for each problem you take on, in their words, with the first step and what it costs, is what Google finds. A page headed ‘Commercial litigation’ rarely is.

how much does a solicitor charge for a will
Wills and conveyancing are shopped on price.
For planned work, people compare fees before they compare firms. Your fixed fee including GST, what’s in it and what costs extra, on its own page and in your Google profile’s services, is what they choose on.

unfair dismissal lawyer
Dismissed this week: the time limit is short, so they ring today.
People search the day it happens and ring the first firm that sounds like it can help. If employment work suits you, ads put you at the top while they’re looking, sent to a page that says what the first appointment costs and what to have ready.

Conduct rules
Written with the Solicitors’ Conduct Rules in mind.
Rule 36, under the Uniform Law in NSW, Victoria and WA and your state’s own version elsewhere, reaches your ads, your Google profile and every article, not only your website. The principal answers for all of it, so everything we write, post and run for you is written with it in mind.
- ‘Accredited specialist’ used only for the solicitor who holds it, in ads and on your Google profile alike.
- No win rates, ‘best lawyer’ claims or promised outcomes, anywhere.
- Testimonials only with the client’s written consent, and nothing in them that identifies anyone.
- Review replies that never confirm someone was a client, or mention their matter.
- Personal injury work advertised only as far as your state allows, and never through paid injury referrals.
- Fees shown as one total including GST, with disbursements shown apart.
The first three months.
What Joseph would usually do first for a small law firm. The order changes with what he finds before the call.
Weeks 1 to 2
The profile, done properly
Named as it is on your sign, categories and services for each area of law, the lawyers who see clients on profiles of their own where Google allows it, and a review request as every matter closes.
Weeks 2 to 4
Ads for one urgent area
If they fit: one area where people need help this week, your firm’s name plain in every ad, sent to a page that says what the first appointment costs.
Months 2 to 3
A page for each problem
The matters you want more of, each on its own page in your clients’ words, with the fee, the first step and what to bring.
Every month
Reviews and a report
Every review answered without confirming anyone was a client, the map checked from your clients’ streets, and new enquiries counted by where they came from.
Your website is where a referral decides to ring.
Every ad, profile and article sends people to your site, and so does every friend who recommends you. If it doesn’t show the problems you take on, who they’d see and what the first appointment costs, on a phone, the marketing pays for visits that don’t ring. If yours needs work, Joseph rebuilds your homepage free first, and you see it before you decide anything.

How much does law firm marketing cost?
With bdog, from $449 a month +GST for Google profile management. Website SEO is from $1,300 a month, and Google Ads management is from $600 a month plus your ad spend. Joseph quotes the mix for your firm after a 15-minute call.
What is SEO for lawyers?
Law firm SEO, sometimes called legal SEO, is making your firm the one Google shows when people nearby search their problem or a lawyer in their suburb: your Google profile and reviews for the map, and a page on your website for each kind of matter you take on, in the words your clients use.
Do Google Ads work for law firms?
For urgent matters, often: a dismissal, a dispute with a deadline. Legal clicks are some of the dearest on Google, so ads are poor value for work people shop on price, like a simple will. Joseph checks what clicks cost for your areas of law before the call.
Can lawyers use testimonials and Google reviews?
Yes. The health testimonial ban doesn’t apply to lawyers. A testimonial needs the client’s written consent and nothing that identifies them, is restricted on personal injury advertising in some states, and needs extra care in family and criminal matters. Ask every client for a review the same way, and reply without confirming they were a client.
Is lawyer SEO worth it for a small firm?
Referrals and past clients will probably still bring most of your work, and lawyer SEO doesn’t change that. It changes what those people find when they search your name, and whether people nobody referred find you at all. It usually takes months, and keeps working once it does.
We pay for a directory or a lead platform. Is that a problem?
Not usually. A flat listing fee is advertising. Paying per enquiry or per matter can look more like paying for referrals, which rule 12 says you disclose to the client first, and which some states ban outright for personal injury work. Bring what it costs you per new matter to the call. If it’s working, Joseph will tell you to keep it.
See who’s above you when someone searches their problem.
